naming child after parent with bad or strange name

HALACHA A DAY KEEPS THE YETZER HARA AWAY

Q. should one avoid naming his son after his father, if his father has the same name as an evil person found in history?

A. in such a case one should avoid naming his child with that name; for example if the father’s name is Nimrod or Esav. Rather, he should choose from the names of righteous people like Avraham, Yitzchk and Yaakov. However, it should be done in a sensitive way so as not to cause tension between him and his father. (Kitzur Yalkut Yosef YD 240 ch.8 #12)

Q. showed one avoid naming his child after his parent, if the parent has a strange name?

A. one should avoid giving his child a name which in the future may cause them to become embarrassed. Rather, they should choose a name which sounds similar to that name or give the child two names and the parents name should be the second. (ibid.17)
